How far behind is India from China ?

Last Sunday I met my friend who often visit china for business purpose, we have discussed many points on the topic. he interacted with 100 Chinese people at all levels and from the Indian side he has regular interactions with cabinet ministers with coconut vendors. If not for Covid, it would have set up a sales subsidiary in China.

here I have summarized some points which shows, where is India far behind-

1. India lags far behind China in female labor force participation. All over China you can see women being part of the business [although in the upper end it is completely male dominated] in completely different numbers from India. In India, a gender is almost completely absent in the growth generation of GDP.

2. India is also far behind in terms of urban infrastructure. China has built up a lot of cities - this allows for a better spread of development - along with a vast amount of metro trains, high speed rail, etc. The Government of India is trying to bridge the gap, although it is now quite large.

3. China is also far ahead in basic health indicators, thanks to decades of investment since Mao's time. It will take a long time for India to overcome this.

There are many other aspects where India lags behind, but those factors are not as big as the ones above.
That said, there are some ways of India's strength:

1. Indians are better at dealing with the rest of the world. India's ability to work with a diverse group through democratic means [argument, discussion] has been a fundamental strength of India over time. Indian execution at the helm of various companies is just a small example of how India basically has better ways of building bridges with the rest. China defaults to a master-slave mode that may work in some contexts [such as dealing with small countries that are far away] but will bring further problems.

2. Chinese demographics are becoming more heterogeneous and the demographic advantage they have gained over 4 decades - where 2 parents support 1 child will backfire as 1 child has to support 2 aging parents. India's demography is better.

3. In terms of political system, there is less uncertainty in India. Apart from one instance during the Partition of India, India is quite used to operating in anarchy and has historically avoided civil wars, revolutions or major social unrest. For centuries, China has been either very stable and prosperous or the extreme opposite of extreme chaos and bloodshed. This uncertainty will hang over China if it is to transform into a democracy like every developed country over time.
